<p style="text-indent: 2em">一般所说的常春藤大学并不是特指一间大学，而是指包括八所大学的一个大学联盟。它们都位于美国的东部，北至新罕布舍尔州，南到宾夕法尼亚州。虽然这些大学都有古色古香的建筑物，墙壁上爬满了常春藤，但常春藤大学一名最早却不是由这种植物来的。</p>

<p style="text-indent: 2em">最早的常春藤学校实际上是四所大学结成的校际体育联盟。这四所大学是麻萨诸塞州的哈佛大学、狄克州的耶鲁大学、哥伦比亚大学和新泽西州的普林斯顿大学。四的罗马数字写为IV，然后加上词尾Y，就成了IVY，于是又称为常春藤大学。由于校际进行体育竞赛，不可避免地会造成各校为争抢体育学生高手，而忽视了学习成绩和其它方面的入学要求，所以长青藤学校之间共同制定了招生原则，即不因体育才能而依家庭经济情况而发放奖学金。后来这四所大学的联盟又扩展到八所，加入了罗得岛的布朗大学、纽约州的康奈尔大学、新罕布舍尔州的达特茅斯学院和宾夕法尼亚州的宾州大学。 <span>
